Education System in Canada

Canada’s education system stands as a testament to excellence and inclusivity, consistently ranking among the world’s finest. Governed primarily at the provincial level while guided by federal oversight, this system ensures rigorous standards across the nation. It encompasses both public and private education alternatives, spanning primary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.

Primary Education: Referred to as elementary schooling, primary education typically commences at ages five or six, extending to approximately ages 13 or 14 (grades 1-8). Kindergarten may be discretionary based on provincial regulations. Core subjects, such as language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, form the cornerstone of the curriculum.

Secondary Education: Secondary schooling, or high school, encompasses grades 9-12, typically commencing around ages 14 and concluding at ages 17 or 18. In Quebec, students may pursue high school until age 16 before transitioning to CEGEP, a two-year college offering university preparatory or vocational diplomas.

Post-secondary Education: Canada boasts a globally recognized network of colleges and universities, offering a diverse array of programs. University degrees hold esteemed stature internationally, with institutions situated in both urban and rural locales. The academic calendar typically spans from September to April or May, with opportunities for summer coursework. Colleges may offer programs year-round, featuring flexible commencement dates.

Language of Instruction: While English serves as the predominant medium of instruction across most of Canada, French-language education is readily available, particularly in Quebec. Students typically possess the option to pursue studies in either English or French, with language instruction commencing at an early stage. In Quebec, attendance in French-language schools is generally mandatory, albeit with exemptions under specific circumstances.

Accessibility and Inclusivity: Canada places paramount importance on accessibility and inclusivity within its education framework, striving to accommodate students from diverse backgrounds, including linguistic minorities and Indigenous communities. Government subsidies substantially support education, with significant investment in both public and post-secondary sectors.

International Recognition: Degrees conferred by Canadian universities command global recognition for their academic rigour and quality. The nation’s institutions of higher learning attract students worldwide, offering a rich academic milieu within a multicultural landscape.

In Canada, the education system is overseen by provincial governments, resulting in various clusters of study levels and educational stages with differing names. Here’s an overview:

DLIS Institution For Bangladeshi Students

“Designated Learning Institution.” Designated Learning Institutions are educational institutions approved by provincial or territorial governments to host international students on a study permit. These institutions must meet certain criteria set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to be eligible to host international students.

International students who wish to study at a Canadian institution must obtain a study permit. To be eligible for a study permit, the institution they plan to attend must be designated by IRCC as a DLI. This designation ensures that the institution meets certain standards regarding the quality of education, facilities, and support services provided to international students.

Please note that all primary and secondary schools in Canada are automatically designated learning institutions and are not listed here.

DLI status is an important consideration for both prospective international students and Canadian educational institutions seeking to host them. If you’re planning to attend a post-secondary school, ensure that it appears on this list.

If your chosen institution loses its DLI status while you’re studying, you’re permitted to continue your studies until your study permit expires. However, you may need to seek admission to a new DLI under certain circumstances.

Pathway to PR

Becoming a Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) offers a myriad of benefits, making it an appealing option for those seeking a fresh start. With PR status, individuals gain the freedom to reside and work anywhere in Canada, access top-notch healthcare and education systems, and pursue diverse career opportunities.

Moreover, Canadian PR status serves as a pathway to citizenship, facilitating deeper integration into the country’s multicultural fabric. It also enables individuals to sponsor family members, ensuring their loved ones can share in Canada’s stability and opportunities.

Sure, here’s a simplified chart representing the maximum points available for each factor in the Canada PR points system:

Remember, meeting the minimum requirement of 67 points is crucial for eligibility for permanent residency in Canada.

To be eligible for permanent residence under the Canadian Experience Class you must have completed, within the three years before you apply, at least:

  • 12 months of full-time work
  • 30 hours/week for 12 months = 1 year full-time (1,560 hours), OR
  • equal amount in part-time hours, such as:
  • 15 hours/week for 24 months = 1 year full-time (1,560 hours)
  • 30 hours/week for 12 months at more than 1 job = 1 year full time (1,560 hours)

Understanding PR Documentation

Permanent Residence Card (PR Card): A crucial document issued to PR holders, serving as proof of their status when travelling in and out of Canada. Renewal of the PR Card is essential every five years, encouraging PR holders to stay updated on their status.

Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD): For PR holders outside of Canada needing to return, a PRTD allows for re-entry when a valid PR Card is unavailable.

Maintaining PR Status

Maintaining PR status requires fulfilling residency obligations, typically involving at least 730 days of physical presence within five years, unless exceptions apply.

Path to Citizenship

To achieve Canadian citizenship through naturalization, individuals must initially immigrate to Canada as permanent residents. Like all Canadian immigration programs, aspiring citizens must meet specific eligibility criteria:

  • Residency Requirements: Applicants must furnish evidence of residing in Canada for at least three years (1,095 days) out of the preceding five years, with some exceptions.
  • Tax Compliance: Citizenship applicants are mandated to have filed their taxes in Canada for at least three years within the five years before applying.
  • Citizenship Test: Individuals aged 18 to 54 must undergo a citizenship test, demonstrating their comprehension of Canadian rights and responsibilities.
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in either French or English is mandatory for Canadian citizenship applicants, ensuring effective communication and integration into Canadian society.

Immigration Pathways

Various immigration pathways exist for obtaining Canadian PR, including economic, business, sponsorship, or humanitarian programs, providing flexibility for individuals seeking permanent residency in Canada.
